She loved those red shoes. She still has them tucked away in her cupboard, can’t bear to throw them out.
She remembers the day she bought them. They were high on the shelf, their boldness drawing her eye in a sea of beige, brown and black. They had her size. She tried them on. They made her smile.
She wore them almost every day, except when she wore pink. A splash of colour, of boldness and fun.
She didn’t want something new, she wanted to stay with the old. They were comfortable, they brought joy, she really loved those red shoes! But they were worn out, falling apart.
She finds it hard to welcome change sometimes, especially when what she is used to is comfortable and seems to fit her just right. She’ll resist, put up a fight, even if she is worn out and falling apart.
Then the new comes. The shape and feel are weird at first and perhaps she doesn’t feel so much joy, but it’s fresh and clean and soon will be comfortable.
She loves this verse from Isaiah 43:18-19; ‘Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?’
What is she holding on to today that needs to be forgotten? What’s the new thing that needs to be embraced?
She thinks it’s time to throw out those old beloved red shoes.
