Adrenalin still pumping and her body needing to move, she clipped the lead onto the puppy and headed out the door. The interview went well, but she had no idea where she stood in the line of applicants.
The bright sky day invited her up a nearby hill where the view of the mountains and ranges and the city below expanded her chest and her vision beyond the immediate.
After walking out the nerves, she sank down on a bench and waited for the pounding in her ears to subside. Puppy curled up next to her and she sank her hand into her fur. She remembered this time last year, on this very bench, the anguish of the ‘whys’ of life had swilled and swirled and swayed her.
She took out her phone. Wouldn’t it be amazing if she heard the outcome of the interview here, in this place, in this moment? She turned her head to the mountains as a favourite Psalm voiced itself in her thoughts.
‘I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.’ Psalm 121
You know Lord, you who make all things, I lift my eyes to you. Whatever the outcome, I won’t take my eyes off you. I know you’ll help me.
The phone rang. Her hand shook and she took a deep breath. Swiped up.
‘We’re excited to tell you that you’ve been successful, and we’d like to offer you a job.’
She blinked. Are colours suddenly brighter? Puppy looked at her and her tail started thumping.
At the end of the call, she looked again to the hills as her eyes brimmed and her heart swelled in gratitude.
You are a FAITHFUL God.
From anguish to purpose, she stood, AMAZED.
For Reflection:
Are the ‘why’s’ of life swirling and swaying you at the moment?
What’s one thing you can bring today to the God who made the mountains, who watches over your every step?
Why do you think the act of ‘lifting your eyes’ is important?

Thanks you so much, Alison! This reflection is just beautiful, and a strong reminder of where our strength does come from. So relevant right now with all the questions people are asking re Covid, health, jobs, income, an uncertain future, climate change, lockdowns that foil our plans, and anxiety that can be oppressive. Praise God that he has it all in His hands – and we need not fear.
I loved your message last week too. Being clothed with Him. His joy, His love and His spirit…May that be what people see when they look at us.
God bless you in your new job, Ali (what is it?) and thank you for blessing us with your beautiful writing.
With my love
